Once you have WordPress installed and ready, you can go to your URL to log in to WordPress. There should be a link to your WordPress login from your hosting account (usually it is your-url.com/wp-login or wp-admin or something similar). Use the administrator name or email and password you created when setting up your information for your hosting account.

WordPress is highly customizable (in fact, it is 100% customizable because it is open source software), but for the purposes of this guide I am referring to the settings accessed through your WordPress dashboard. If you hover over the Settings menu item in your sidebar, you will see several options.

This may sound like a heavy list, but it doesn’t have to be – there are only a few key settings on these pages that you need to concern yourself with at this stage. Let each one take turns.

General WordPress Settings

The most important settings on this page are the fields for entering your site title and tagline. You can come back and change them at any time, but it is good to get an idea that you want to use them from the beginning for branding. The title will probably be your site name, brand, or your name (if it’s a personal blog), so it’s easy. Think about your tag-line for what your blog wanted to start at first. It should describe what your blog is about. If you wish, you can also change the date and time format from this page.

Writing WordPress Settings

In this section you can set a default post category and post type for your articles. Seeing that you have not yet started blogging is a part that you can return at a later date. This is not an important step, although it can help speed up the blogging process by a few seconds if your default edits to your liking.

Reading WordPress Settings

From the Reading tab you will want to set what your home page displays. Depending on the topic you are using, you may want to use your latest blog post or custom static page. Read more about how to set up and edit your WordPress homepage in our guide.

Discussion WordPress Settings

This page has all the settings related to the comments on your site. Your main thoughts at this time should be whether or not you allow people to post comments and if the comments must be approved manually. There are other options through which you can skim, though most default settings should work fine.

Media WordPress settings

This is where you can opt for the media (picture) you add to your “WordPress website”. WordPress includes thumbnail, medium, and large image size options. If you want to use pre-defined sizes in your posts, you can skip these or customize them.

Permalinks WordPress Settings

When a user is on any page on your site, Permalinks are the one that appears in the browser address bar – this is your url and specific page or post identifier. For example Permalink for this page is “Get-Start-WordPress-Blogging”.

On this settings page you will be presented with a list of different Permalink formats. By default WordPress is set to use Post ID which is not very pretty. Instead, we generally prefer and recommend the post name option as it is easy to use, is visually appealing and is an added boost to your SEO (using your keywords in your slug usually But is a good thing).

Note: Once you select a Permalink structure and start publishing posts you should change without any prepositions. Changing the Permalink structure without proper planning and execution can lead to broken links and 404 errors on your WordPress website, so please use caution and these tips to safely replace your Permalinks.

Bonus: Your Profile

Other than general WordPress settings you should also take a look at your user profile, which can be found under Users > Your Profile or by clicking on your name at the top right of your screen.

The descriptions placed on this screen are often displayed by theme (usually as a post author), so it is important that you take some time to ensure that the correct information is entered. Make sure that the Display Name publicly drop down option is set to the name you want to show to the world. It is defined by your username, first and last name, or a nickname. And if your theme includes support for bios, don’t forget to add it.

Finally, you’ll need to set up a Gravatar (using the same email account as your WordPress login) with the image you want to use for your profile. A good headshot usually makes sense, although you can upload whatever image is appropriate.
